In an important decision towards improving commercial relations, the Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal met Mr. Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Safety. This high -level dialogue took place in Brussels from January 18 to 19, 2025. He marked the first meeting in person between the two leaders, following an introductory video conference in December 2024. The discussions were characterized By mutual respect and an emphasis on establishing a new framework for the strategic program of the Indian-European Union (EU) in trade and investments.
A vision of the economic partnership
During the meeting, the Goyal Minister underlined the Indian government’s commitment to transform the nation into a developed country by 2047. He described six key principles aimed at promoting a mutually beneficial partnership between India and the EU. The first principle highlighted the importance of a relationship based on shared values such as democracy, the rule of law and an independent judicial system. Goyal stressed that this partnership would serve as a trusted platform to develop an economic relationship that integrates the combined market of more than 24 dollars. This integration promises unprecedented opportunities for the 2 billion people residing in India and the EU.
The second principle focused on creating a significant commercial commercial program. Goyal called for a fair and fair approach which addresses both price and non -tariff barriers. The simplification of these barriers will improve the competitiveness of costs, benefiting companies on both sides, in particular small and medium -sized enterprises, farmers and fishermen. This commitment to equity aims to guarantee that all stakeholders can prosper in the evolving commercial landscape.
Advance quality and standards
The third principle discussed during the dialogue was India’s ambition to become a high -quality product market. Goyal reiterated the vision of Prime Minister Modi for “zero defect” and “zero effect” production capacities. To achieve this, India seeks to engage with the EU in the exchange of best practices and harmonization standards. This collaboration will help build mutual processes that increase the quality and sustainability of products, ensuring that the two regions can compete effectively in the global markets.
In addition, the fourth principle highlighted the need for cooperation in the development of advanced technologies. Goyal stressed the importance of obtaining critical critical supply chains and building resilient supply chains. This approach aims to reduce dependencies on non -commercial savings while promoting closer economic links between India and the EU. By working together, the two regions can improve their technological capacities and ensure a stable offer of essential resources.
Sustainable development and future collaborations
The fifth principle discussed was the importance of commercial cooperation in sustainable development. Goyal highlighted the need for a fair approach that considers different development levels between India and the EU. This principle is aligned with the concept of “common but differentiated responsibility”, recognizing that the two regions must work together to achieve sustainable growth while respecting their unique situation.
Finally, Goyal expressed the aspiration of India to become a living bridge with the EU, taking advantage of his young and talented workforce. This partnership aims to promote mutual growth and development, creating collaboration opportunities in various sectors. The leaders have described the political orientations for their teams in order to develop a solid free trade agreement (ALE) and a mutually beneficial program for trade and investment. They also examined the progress of the Indian-EU commerce and technology council (TTC) and have agreed to solve the problems inherited while presenting a roadmap for continuous consultations at the higher and ministerial levels.
