The relationship between India and the European Union is entering a defining phase, shaped by growing economic interdependence, shared democratic values, technological innovation, and a collective commitment to sustainable development. As the global economy undergoes significant transformation, India and the EU are increasingly emerging as natural partners in addressing common challenges and creating new opportunities for growth.Against this backdrop, the India EU Trade Council was honoured to participate in a high-level panel discussion at the European Parliament in Brussels, contributing to the ongoing dialogue surrounding the proposed India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the future of economic cooperation between the two regions.
Discussions at the European Parliament focused on the future of India–EU cooperation, including sustainability, digital transformation, trade facilitation, investment opportunities, innovation, and emerging sectors that are expected to drive economic growth in the coming decades. The engagement reflected the increasing momentum behind the India–EU partnership and the growing recognition that stronger collaboration is essential in an increasingly interconnected world.A key highlight of the visit was the opportunity to engage with Angelika Niebler, Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with India and one of the Parliament’s leading voices on India–EU relations. The discussions explored opportunities to deepen economic engagement, strengthen technology partnerships, and advance cooperation in areas that support long-term growth and competitiveness.
The delegation also held a productive meeting with the former Vice President of the European Union, where discussions centered on the strategic significance of the India–EU relationship, the progress of the proposed Free Trade Agreement, and the broader opportunities for strengthening institutional, economic, and technological cooperation.Beyond the Parliament engagements, the delegation met with business leaders, trade associations, investors, and strategic partners from Germany, Sweden, Italy, Austria, Greece, and several other European countries. These discussions focused on expanding trade and investment, fostering innovation-led partnerships, strengthening technology cooperation, and identifying new avenues for collaboration across sectors critical to future economic growth.
The proposed India–EU Free Trade Agreement remains one of the most significant economic initiatives currently under discussion between the two regions. Beyond enhancing market access and facilitating trade, the agreement has the potential to create new opportunities for businesses, encourage greater investment flows, strengthen supply chains, and support cooperation in emerging sectors including digital technologies, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable infrastructure.
Commenting on the significance of the visit, Dr. Asif Iqbal, President of the India EU Trade Council, stated:“Our engagements at the European Parliament reaffirmed the growing confidence in the India–EU relationship and the immense opportunities that lie ahead.
