The landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union, unveiled by Prime Minister Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, is expected to eliminate tariffs as soon as it comes into force. Dubbed “the mother of all trade deals”, this agreement was announced at the India-EU summit on January 27, 2026.
Shri Shaleen Toshniwal, Chairman, MATEXIL, expressed gratitude to Indian leaders for this consequential agreement amid global trade challenges. He highlighted the strategic importance of the EU and the role of the FTA in strengthening bilateral relations.
Indian textile exporters, especially those selling synthetic and technical textiles, are optimistic about duty-free access to EU markets. Currently burdened with duties of between 8 and 12%, the FTA should strengthen their competitiveness. MATEXIL plans to help its members take advantage of new opportunities created by the FTA.
