The EU and India concluded a defense and security partnership at the New Delhi summit.
This is clear from the summit declaration.
The partnership constitutes the first global framework for cooperation in defense and security between the two parties.
According to the summit declaration, the partnership aims to strengthen ties between the EU and India in, among others, maritime security, defense industry and technology, cyber and hybrid threats, space activities and the fight against terrorism.
On the social media platform X, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the agreement.
– Today, the world’s two largest democracies entered into a security and defense partnership.
– A platform for closer cooperation on the most important strategic issues, from the defense industry to maritime security.
– This is how loyal partners work together, writes von der Leyen.
And other measures could be on the way.
The EU and India also launched negotiations on an information security agreement.
It is intended to facilitate the exchange of classified information.
This could pave the way for even closer cooperation in areas related to security and defense.
Dansk Industri’s director of defense and security, Joachim Finkielman, hopes that this partnership can also have meaning for Danish defense companies.
– It is really positive to have a framework for more formalized defense and security cooperation between India and the EU. There are great opportunities in technology, highly specialized engineers and raw materials.
– We have not yet seen the details of how the cooperation should be implemented, but it is interesting and relevant also for Danish defense companies, says Joachim Finkielman.
The defense and security partnership with India will be the EU’s third in Asia.
The two existing agreements are with Japan and South Korea.
