The seven-member delegation will be led by Cristina Maestre (S&D, ES), INTA committee permanent rapporteur for India, and Brando Benifei (S&D, IT), S&D coordinator of the INTA committee.
Ahead of the visit, the two co-presidents said: “The main objective of this visit is to contribute to increasing our mutual understanding in the context of intense trade negotiations between the EU and India. »
“The mission is timely, just months before the deadline to conclude negotiations on a free trade agreement by the end of 2025. We look forward to discussing the issues at stake, as both sides have a mutual interest in reaching a meaningful bilateral agreement and protecting the rules-based multilateral trading order,” the two co-chairs said.
During the mission, Members of the European Parliament will engage with various stakeholders to receive first-hand information on the opportunities and challenges posed by these trade negotiations.
INTA members are expected to hold various meetings at ministerial and parliamentary levels. Members will meet with the Federation of European Businesses in India and the Confederation of Indian Industry.
Further meetings will be organized with civil society working on sustainability issues and with representatives of workers and employers and organizations working on labor rights.
The International Trade Committee has so far scrutinized the negotiations between the EU and India and any agreement reached would be subject to approval by the European Parliament.
In addition to the two co-presidents, Cristina Maestre and Brando Benifei, the delegation is made up of Juan Ignacio Zoido (PPE, ES), Waldemar Buda (ECR, PL), Barry Cowen (Renew, IE), Vicent Marzà Ibáñez (Greens/EFA, ES) and Angelika Niebler, president of the European Parliament delegation for relations with India (EPP, DE).
