Negotiations between India and the European Union (EU) for a free trade agreement (ALE) are at an advanced stage, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, said on Tuesday September 2, while confirming that New Delhi explores a bilateral trade agreement with the United States.
Speaking during the CII Global Sustainability Summit, the Minister said that the EU commercial delegation would visit India to undertake the 13th cycle of negotiations on September 8. In addition, the EU trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič will be in New Delhi on September 12 to advance talks.
Noting that India has already finalized the reference conditions for a potential Ale with the Eurasian economic union (EAEU), Goyal stressed that India is still open to a fair and mutually beneficial agreement.
Government sources have previously indicated that India and the EU aim to conclude negotiations for an ALE proposed by the end of this year. According to officials, the two parties envisaged an early harvesting agreement – similar to that of India signed with Australia – covering areas such as tariff and non -tariff barriers, intellectual property rights, government purchases, technical obstacles to trade and health and phytosanitary measures.
India-Us Talks continues
Goyal reiterated that India is considering a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the United States. “We are in dialogue with the United States for a BTA,” he said at the event of the House of Industry on sustainability. Negotiations started in March and five laps have been concluded so far.
The next round, initially scheduled for August 25, was deferred after the entry into force of the rights of 50% of Washington from India on August 27, which prompted the American team to delay their visit. No new date has been set for the sixth series of discussions.
India’s relationships with China are disgusting
On geopolitical issues, Goyal said that relations with China “returned to normal” as border disputes were relaxing. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping have accepted the Shanghai cooperation organization to work towards a “just, reasonable and mutually acceptable” solution.
The American decision to impose punitive tasks on Indian exports pushed New Delhi closer to Beijing.
Last month, the visit of the Chinese Foreign Minister WANG YI in New Delhi focused on increasing trade and the management of tensions along the Himalayan border, the two parties agreeing to improve border coordination during the 33rd work mechanism for consultation and coordination (WMCC) in March 2025.
India and China have also announced the resumption of direct flights between the two countries after a five -year stop, marking a new step towards normalization of links.
Speaking at the summit, Goyal also said that the country’s supply chains were diversified and depending on a country that changed a tap “on” or “off”. Evaluating the contribution of each farmer, a worker and hawk to the growth of GDP of 7.8% in the first quarter of the current financial year and imminent TPS reforms, he urged all Indians to save at least 1 kg of food per year to collectively keep 140 million tonnes of food and prevent the waste of water, cereals, to fertilize, fuel and efforts on the board.
