Facing a deadline of 2025 to conclude negotiations on their free trade agreement (ALE), the negotiators of India and the European Union (EU) will try to carry their discussions at the last period during their next series of talks in September.
The 13th round of talks on the Ale will be held from September 8 to September 12.
Ocular convergence of negotiators
“Many problems in the negotiator will be finalized. This is the effort. A lot of efforts take place in all areas to see where convergence can occur. Wherever we cannot make a decision, we will put it in a political direction,” said a senior official.
During the last series of conferences, the two parties exchanged offers on the liberalization of goods and services. The FTA has 23 chapters, or political areas, five of which were finalized until the 11th round in June. In the 12th round, many differences were filled in the remaining chapters.
After the 13th cycle of negotiations, the EU trade commissioner, Maroš Šefčovič, is expected to visit India.
Strategic importance of the EU Pact
The manager said there was enormous potential in the EU and that we focus on this. With the EU, India would have covered all of Europe with the FTA. The agreement with the United Kingdom was signed with the European Free Trade Association (ARE) to four countries and will come into force from October 1.
India and the EU have been negotiating the ALE since 2022. The FTA covers 23 political areas or chapters, in particular the trade in goods and services, investment, health and phytosanitary measures, technical obstacles to trade, commercial remedies, rules of origin, customs and trade facilitation, competition, commercial defense, government purchases intellectual, geographic indications and geographic indications and sustainable development.
