India was unleashed in the United States and the European Union, criticizing what it described as “double standard” on their trade relations with Russia, after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose higher prices on Indian products due to the continuous import of New Delhi of Russian oil.
“The countries which criticize India are themselves engaged in trade with Russia,” said the Ministry of India on external affairs on Monday evening, adding that “it is unjustified to target India only”.
He noted that the European Union had carried out a business with Russia worth 67.5 billion euros ($ 78.02 billion) in 2024, including IMP importation of LNG of 16.5 million metric tonnes.
According to the press release, the United States has continued to import Russian uranium hexafluoride for use in the nuclear energy sector, as well as palladium, fertilizers and chemicals, without clarifying the source of this information.
This escalation follows the direct threats made by Trump on July 31, announcing 25% of tariffs on Indian products exported to his country, while threatening unpertified sanctions against Indian Russian oil purchases, in what observers have described as a sudden escalation of relations between Washington and New Delhi.
India, one of the largest Russian oil importers, imported approximately 1.75 million barrels per day between January and June 2025, up 1% compared to the same period last year.
The EU in July imposed sanctions on Nayara Energy of India, a great refiner in which Rosneft of Russia has a majority participation. New Delhi argued that he does not recognize the “unilateral sanctions” imposed by the EU.
New Delhi scathing response
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi Bharatiya Janata (BJP) Prime Minister Narendra and the main party of the opposition congress condemned the current American criticism. “Trump’s insulting remarks harm the dignity of the Indians,” said the deputy for the Manish Tiwari Congress, adding: “It is time to put an end to this incessant intimidation and intimidation.”
BJP vice-president, Baijayant, Jai Panda, recalled a famous quote from Henry Kissinger on the X platform: “Being an enemy of America can be dangerous, but being a friend of America is deadly.”
Commercial experts believe that upcoming American prices could damage significant damage to the Indian economy. Ajay Srivastava, of the Global Trade Research Initiative in New Delhi, said that it expects India exports to the United States to decrease 30% during the current fiscal year to $ 60.6 billion of $ 86.5 billion during the fiscal year 2025.
Commercial tension was reflected directly on the markets, Indian stock indices falling after Trump’s latest threats.
