India is in talks with the EU to combat new commercial regulations, in particular concerning deforestation and certification of products. The Minister of Commerce, Piyush Goyal, underlines government efforts to find mutually acceptable solutions.
Answering questions about EU’s trade barriers in Rajya Sabha, Goyal said the EU had introduced new regulations for their own industries.
“There is certainly a problem where the EU has found new regulations that we actively discuss with them to resolve,” he said.
The government has discussions on questions such as deforestation law, he said, adding: “We will have to engage with them and find a mutual resolution to facilitate the process and ensure that this will not harm our industry. “
Goyal said that if unfair trade barriers are imposed, the government would greatly take up the question with India counterparts through bilateral discussions and multilateral commercial organizations.
When he was asked if India had launched a discussion with the EU concerning the pacts contained in mutually given the strict regulations, the minister said it was discussed three weeks ago.
“We will deputize certain EU laboratories if they approve of the corresponding Indian laboratories for the certification of our products,” he added.
On the non-recognition of Indian quality certification in the EU, the Minister said that the EU and India established standards in accordance with their own requirements.
“Today, EU societies must take the certification of bis or fssai, just as we must take the certification of their organization. It is a reciprocal world, and India is dealing with countries in the Spirit of reciprocity, “he added.
