Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Monday met EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic to discuss the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, as Sefcovic visited New Delhi to take forward negotiations on the deal.
The meeting follows continued trade talks ahead of the India-EU summit next week, where both sides aim to finalize the long-awaited deal. Problems related to access to agricultural markets and alcoholic beverages have been resolved, but challenges remain regarding steel, cars and carbon tariffs.
The EU, India’s largest trading partner, saw bilateral trade reach $135 billion in the 2023-24 financial year. The proposed trade deal is expected to significantly strengthen the economic partnership by the end of the year, following global trade disruptions.
