India and Hungary on Thursday held talks to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation under the India-EU strategic partnership, with emphasis on early conclusion of the India-EU trade agreement.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Indian Ambassador to Hungary Anshuman Gaur and Barna Pal Zsigmond, Deputy Minister and Parliamentary State Secretary at the Hungarian Ministry of European Union Affairs.
Strengthening ties between India and Hungary

The Indian Embassy in Hungary said the talks were “comprehensive and fruitful”, focused on deepening the bilateral partnership and exploring new avenues of economic and political collaboration.
“The Ambassador had a comprehensive and fruitful meeting with Mr. Barna Pal Zsigmond, Deputy Minister and Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of European Union Affairs of Hungary. Excellent discussion on strengthening the India-Hungary bilateral partnership and strengthening cooperation on issues concerning the India-EU Strategic Partnership and early conclusion of the India-EU Trade Agreement. A joint commitment to strengthen ties in the economic and political spheres,” the embassy posted on X.
Relations between India and Hungary have always been close and multifaceted. Hungary fondly remembers India’s intervention during the 1956 uprising, when New Delhi’s diplomatic efforts with the Soviet Union saved the life of Árpád Göncz, who later became President of Hungary (1990-2000).
150 years of Vande Mataram
On November 7, members of the Indian community in Hungary participated in a special event at the Amrita Sher-Gil Cultural Center in Budapest to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Indian national song “Vande Mataram”.
The embassy said, “The Amrita Sher-Gil Cultural Center at the Indian Embassy in Budapest today was the vibrant setting for a special commemoration, marking the 150th anniversary of India’s national song, ‘Vande Mataram’. The event began with the Indian Ambassador eloquently highlighting the deep historical and emotional significance of this powerful anthem.” The program also included excerpts from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at the main event at Delhi, linking local celebrations in Budapest with the national tribute.
“The atmosphere reached a crescendo with the enthusiastic singing of Vande Mataram by the gathered members of the Indian community and friends of India, followed by a truly moving rendition of the song performed especially by our talented Hungarian friends,” the embassy added.
The event highlighted the cultural bond and goodwill between the two nations, reinforcing India’s growing soft power in Central Europe.
