Negotiations on the free trade agreement between India and the European Union intensified with the arrival of EU negotiators in New Delhi on Monday. Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, also met with Maroš Šefčovič, Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security of the European Union (EU), to discuss progress under the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The minister said in a post on X that his meeting with the officer had been productive.

“We discussed strengthening trade and investment ties between India and the EU, promoting the FTA and deepening cooperation in priority areas. Both sides are committed to achieving balanced and mutually beneficial outcomes,” he added.
The talks in New Delhi began on Monday and will continue until November 7, 2025. The commitments aim to resolve key outstanding issues and advance the agreement towards a balanced and fair framework that benefits both sides.
Piyush Goyal visited Brussels on October 27-28, 2025, where he held discussions with the other side on the trade deal.
The current deliberations will cover issues such as trade in goods, trade in services and rules of origin, among others, as well as technical and institutional issues, ANI reported.
Sabine Weyand, Director General for Trade at the European Commission (EU DG Trade), will also be in the national capital on November 5-6, 2025 for talks with Indian Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal.
India is also negotiating a free trade agreement with the United States. Donald Trump’s administration imposed 50% tariffs on India, making Indian exports to the United States too expensive compared to regional competition. Tariffs threaten several industries and thousands of direct and associated jobs.
