In an effort to finalize an important trade agreement by the end of the year, India and the European Union are engaged in critical negotiations in New Delhi this week. The talks aim to approach the main discord points, including agricultural concessions, access to the dairy market and non -pricing obstacles, according to sources of both parties.
Negotiations, which were relaunched in 2022, gained momentum after the re -election of President Trump and the resulting tariff hikes on Indian products. While New Delhi seeks to deepen world commercial partnerships, Brussels also wishes to strengthen alliances in the midst of external prices, having already obtained agreements with the countries of Mexico and Mercosur.
Despite the progress of several chapters of the agreement, important questions are not resolved. India’s position on the preservation of agricultural sectors, EU demand for improving access to Indian markets and climate policy disputes such as EU carbon border tax, continue to make challenges to achieve consensus.
