New Delhi: The European Union Political and Security Committee (PSC) is expected to visit India for the first time from September 10 to 14, while the two partners seek to strengthen links in the current world unrest.
“In the volatile geopolitical and economic landscape today, the EU and India emerge as natural partners with strongly convergent interests and shared values. Our leaders are determined to raise the strategic partnership of the EU-India and to exploit its immense potential, “said Hervé Delphin, EU ambassador in India, in a statement on Monday.
Delphin added: “The PSC visit to India highlights the European team’s collective will to strengthen links with India, in particular in the field of defense and security cooperation.”

Ambassador Delphine Pronk, the president of the PSC, added that the India-UE partnership is vital in fields such as “fight against terrorism, cybersecurity, hybrid threats, maritime security and awareness of the maritime field, space security, cooperation of the defense and counter-manipulation of foreign information”.
All the subjects mentioned above should be part of the agenda when visiting the PSC in India.
The visit is based on the previous commissioners by 21 of the EU with the chairman of the Ursula von der Leyen commission in February. This visit to the College of Commissioners (equivalent to the Union’s office) in New Delhi was the first in the history of links between the two partners.
Agricultural commissioner Christophe Hansen and Commerce Commissioner Maros Sefcovic are also visiting India this week to push negotiations for India – EU FTA.
The raft of diplomacy between the two parties is expected to speed up over the next three months. The EU is likely to announce its new strategic vision of links with India later this month, according to reports.
The growing commitment in the key areas comes in the midst of the disorders in the global geopolitical situation, in particular the commercial regime, which was subject to pressure while the American president Donald Trump unveiled various measures to promote his “America First” program. Prices on all countries of the world, to investment agreements in conclusion with longtime allies, Trump sought to reshape the global commercial regime of that created 80 years ago at the end of the Second World War.

The links between New Delhi and Washington DC were affected by the taxation of prices of 50% by Trump last month on Indian exports for what he called unfair negotiation practices and the continuous purchase of Russian oil. The United States is the largest export market in India, which affected $ 86 billion in the last financial year.
The links between the United States and the EU have been complicated since Trump’s return to the White House. The American president concluded a trade agreement with the EU a few months ago, which would see European companies investing hundreds of billions of dollars in the American economy in exchange for continuous access to the North American Nation.
India has sought to diversify its business links in recent months by focusing on the free trade agreements with different countries. New Delhi has signed an Ale with London in May this year and should announce one with Oman soon. In addition, India has opened negotiations with Australia for the second tranche of its trade agreement and is in the midst of a negotiation for an agreement with the EU.
The EU’s agreement is being negotiated in the past three years, but there has been an increase in the impetus to conclude consultations by the end of this year, before a potential summit of India-EU in New Delhi at the start of next year.
“During their first visit to India, the Committee will organize strategic discussions with representatives of the high -level Indian government, representatives of the private sector defense, civil society organizations and thought throws,” said the EU statement.
The press release added: “This in-depth commitment aims to provide a complete evaluation of political priorities, while exploring future avenues to improve cooperation on key questions from foreign policy, security and defense, in particular in the head of the next EU-India summit.”
The PSC includes the ambassadors of all EU member states. Based in Brussels and chaired by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the PSC plays a key role in the EU foreign and current security policy (CFSP) and the common security and defense policy (CSDP) – the key to the block of 27 members in its external relations.
The PSC also advises the EU military committee and other related strategic groups within the organization. The growing partnership of India-EU in the strategic fields comes while New Delhi extends its bilateral links among the key members of the organization such as Germany, Spain and France.
German Minister for Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul was in New Delhi last week, where he highlighted the vision of Berlin from New Delhi, that of being a friend “trusting” in an increasingly volatile world. The Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, said at the time that “predictability” was a “premium” today by emphasizing the growing convergence of opinions between India and Germany and the EU by extension.
