
Nicosia – India plans to finalize a free trade agreement with the European Union by the end of this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday, while Cyprus, who assumes the EU presidency in 2026, said better links.
Modi, during an official visit to the island of the eastern Mediterranean, said that there were unlimited possibilities to expand economic ties with Cyprus in a visit to advance the World Trade Program of India.
“We are working on the finalization of an India-EU MUSTURE beneficial trade agreement by the end of this year,” said Modi in joint remarks with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
India pursues a commercial link by the sea and the rail known as the India-Middle East-Europe corridor, but the visit takes place in the shadow of a growing crisis in the Middle East. “We agree that the corridor of India – of Europe in the Middle East will open the way to peace and prosperity in the region,” said Modi.
Cyprus, which maintains close relations with India thanks to its shared members of the Commonwealth, offers the installations to be a first point of entry into Europe and a transhipment center, said Christodoulides.
“An EU-Indian relations strengthening will be among the priorities of the EU Cypriot Presidency,” said Christodoulides. Cyprus assumes the six -month -old rotation presidency of the block at the beginning of 2026. Reuters
