While India and the EU should organize a spouse’s naval exercise in the coming days in the Indian Ocean, Italy appears as an evolving theater. FRIGATE ANTONIO MARCEGLIA will train in advanced counter-piracy operations, tactical maneuvers and communication protocols
Indian security. India and the European Union will carry out a joint naval exercise from June 1 to 3, 2025, in the Indian Ocean, marking a new chapter of maritime security cooperation.
- The Italian frigate Antonio Marceglia And Spain Reina SofíaFrom Operation Eunav for Atalanta, will train alongside the Indian navy ships in advanced counter-piracy, tactical maneuvers and communication protocols.
- Italy, through its naval assets and its diplomatic commitment, is positioned as a European European actor in this evolving theater.
Decode the news. The exercise highlights the increasing strategic presence of the EU in Indo-Pacific, but more importantly, it reflects the emergence of India as a key security supplier in the broader Indo-Mediterranean space.
- The exercise follows a high-level diplomatic activity, including the European Visit of the European Commission in India and the EU-India maritime security dialogue.
- Vice-admiral Ignacio Villanueva Serrano, head of Operation Atalanta, visited India in April to deepen operational links.
- Italy Antonio Marceglia directs the naval presence of the EU, strengthening the Indo-Medite Posture of Rome.
The angle of Italy. Italy was a constant contributor to Operation Atalanta and an ardent defender of maritime cooperation with India.
- Rome considers New Delhi as a key partner to secure vital sea communication lines extending from the Western Indian Ocean to the eastern Mediterranean.
- The exercise highlights the broader Indo-Mediterranean strategy of Italy, which combines a military presence, diplomatic awareness and infrastructure initiatives.
What is in the Indian Ocean. Before deepening links with Europe, India had already improved interoperability with African partners, performing joint exercises such as the Aikeyme exercise.
- This sequencing strengthens the vision of Indo -Mediterranean Indo -Mediterranean as a connected strategic space – and Italy quickly adapted to this reality.
What we look at. The growing cooperation between India and Europe – anchored by Italian leadership – could evolve towards a more permanent security framework for Indo -Mediterranean, especially since projects such as the Corridor of Eastern Indian Eastern (IMEC) evolve.
- A key moment will be the next meeting of the IMEC organized by Italy in Trieste, which could prove to be decisive for the future of the corridor – designed on a fundamental conscience: without (maritime) security, it cannot exist.
