NEW DELHI: The Minister of State of the Union (MOS) for Defense Sanjay Seth met Andrius Kubilius, the commissioner of the European Defense and Space Commission, in New Delhi. Their discussions have focused on improving cooperation in the European Union defense and security (EU), in particular in maritime commitments and the sharing of information in the Indo-Pacific Region.

An important aspect of their dialogue was the exploration of industrial defense collaboration. The two leaders stressed the importance of European defense companies participating in joint projects and co -production initiatives in India. This is aligned with the broader EU strategy to diversify critical value chains in sectors such as defense, batteries, pharmaceuticals and clean hydrogen.

The meeting also addressed the potential involvement of India in permanent structured cooperation of the EU (PESCO) and other European Development Development Programs. This initiative reflects a mutual commitment to strengthen strategic partnerships and to promote a global order based on rules.

The visit of Mr. Kubilius is part of a larger delegation led by the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, including 22 of the 27 EU commissioners. This marks the first collective visit abroad of the team since she took office in December 2024. Discussions of the delegation in India have focused on strengthening collaboration in areas such as artificial intelligence, trade and cooperation of defense.

This high-level commitment highlights the intention of the EU to accelerate the finalization of a complete free trade agreement with India in the year. The renewed push for this agreement is driven by the dynamics of global trade and a devotion shared with effective multilateralism.
