
Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as developments in South Asia and the Middle East, were on the agenda of the European Union talks and the second round of security and defense consultations from India to New Delhi. The high-level deliberations served as a platform for an in-depth exchange of perspectives and assessments on relevant international and regional issues.
Importantly, the consultations which took place on 6 May 2024 provided an opportune moment to review the progress and future trajectory of the security and defense policy frameworks. The European Union presented progress in implementing its Strategic Compass and Indo-Pacific Strategy, highlighting the importance of synergistic approaches towards common security goals. Notable mentions include the European Defense Industrial Strategy (EDIS) and the launch of new EU operations, including EUNAVFOR Aspides.
In line with their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation, the EU and India affirmed their intention to strengthen collaboration in various areas. Emphasis was placed on strengthening joint efforts in cyber defense, maritime security and crisis management. Leveraging the platform provided by the European Strengthening Cooperation in and with Asia (ESIWA) project, both parties are committed to maximizing opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange.
In addition, the consultations highlighted a mutual recognition of the evolving security landscape, sparking a collective determination to explore new avenues of cooperation. Space security has emerged as a promising frontier, reflecting the common aspiration to harness emerging technologies to preserve peace and security.
The co-chairing of the consultations by Joanneke Balfoort, Director of Security and Defense Policy of the European External Action Service, and Vishwesh Negi, Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) of the Indian Ministry of Defense, illustrated the spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility in navigating complex security challenges.
As the global security architecture continues to evolve, the EU-India consultations serve as a model of proactive engagement and collaborative action, reaffirming the enduring partnership between two strategic allies committed to advancing peace and stability on the world stage.
